Bike Pedals & Cleats

Choosing the right bike pedals makes more difference to your riding than most cyclists expect - affecting power transfer, comfort and knee health whether you're on tarmac or trails.

Road pedals use a three-bolt cleat system (Shimano SPD-SL, Look, Wahoo Speedplay), are single-sided and optimised for stiffness and power transfer. The trade-off is walkability - road cleats protrude from the sole.

MTB and SPD pedals use a two-bolt metal cleat recessed into the sole of your cycling shoes, making walking significantly easier. They're double-sided for quicker clip-in - ideal on technical terrain. Shimano's SPD system is the benchmark, covering everything from commuting to enduro. If you're new to clipless pedals, SPD is almost always the right place to start.

Flat pedals suit riders who prefer direct foot feel, or anyone not yet ready to commit to clipless.
